my name is Tiffany Strickland find the assistant vice president of membership development at nusenda Credit Union provide everything from Financial capability counseling who checking and savings accounts credit cards auto loan mortgages small business loans big Bank services with a small-town attitude love our partnership with sippy and it ranges and everything tabling events for career days to new student orientation we have a really robust Financial education curriculum that is age appropriate to students to really meet them where they're at some students really just need to know how to get the next step and they're very immediate needs in a for friend rather than thinking about retirement or a mortgage down the road some students are at that place and were able to meet them where they are as well but it's important for us that students understand and especially as they transition into the college atmosphere does basic simple things to make them successful like budgeting like managing scholarship money like knowing what to expect expenses as they move through their college career really proud of our work with securing families financially so far we've had about 45 people go through the course and is targeted at single moms with children under the age of eight and what we do is we have real conversations about how to manage your money how to become independently and financially stable and tips and tricks to meet them where they're at raising young children credit is a mystery to a lot of college students and it can come in a really predatory manner making it very easy to establish credit or get quick access to money to pay your bills and so will who is we work to educate our students on what credit really looks like and what are safe choices for them to utilize so that they are never in a downward spiral that will affect them long after their time at college so if you're a first-year college students here's a few things that you should keep in mind one as establish a budget make sure that you're really accounting for not only your school expense put your personal expenses and that would include entertainment you want to be able to maybe go to the movies with a friend or go out to eat or get your nails done or your hair done maybe you have a car and you need to make sure that you can put gas in your car and get an oil change so really account for every single bit of expense that you're going to anticipate every month and while you do that make sure you pay yourself first create an emergency savings fund and that way if something happens to your car or you need extra books for or you have a special trip that you want to save up for you have that account that has money that you can fall back on to use also credit is your friend you can apply for a credit card but be sure you really look at the interest rate at $3 hamburger with a 25% interest rate isn't really a $3 hamburger that ends up being you know like a $10 hamburger by the time you get it paid off so look at what you need to we recommend that you purchase only what you can pay down every month we recommend that you look for cards or or use a credit that can benefit you like maybe there's a car that has reward shopping for groceries or for gas over things that you really need and utilize on a frequent basis those end up putting money back into your account and that's the best way to utilize your credit working with any credit union include that you are the member you are the member owner and so you get to have a say in how your credit union is run we have over 600 wave to qualify you for membership send a credit union and when you are a sippy student or a faculty member of sippy you are automatically eligible for membership at nusenda Credit Union Additionally the members are owners so when we have dividends they go back to you is the member rather than going to a stakeholder it may be located in another state and your money stays local we give you the resources to have not only competitive rates with all of our products and services but we have people live and work and play where you do so they're looking out for your best interest when you manage your money how do you send a credit union your trusted financial advisor we're here to help you make the best decisions you can for your own finances and to keep you financially healthy we're here to assist you with your decisions and were easy accessible to talk to you so you can Ledger account online at nusenda.org you can call our call center and you can even use the mobile banking platform but we're always happy to see you in any of our ranches
